This Privacy Policy explains how Imagio LLC (“Imagio,” “we,” “us,” or “our”), a California limited liability company, handles information in connection with the Unhack application and website (collectively, the “Service”).

Unhack is an independent product. Unhack is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or connected to Hacker News, Y Combinator, or any publishers of the articles it links to. All product names, logos, and brands are the property of their respective owners.

By using the Service, you agree to this Privacy Policy and to our Terms of Use. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Summary

The Service does not require you to create an account and does not ask for your name, email, or password to read content.
Your topic preferences (the categories you choose to show, hide, or filter) are stored locally on your device and are not sent to or stored on our servers.
Like virtually all internet services, our infrastructure providers automatically log technical information (such as IP address, device and operating-system type, and timestamps) needed to operate and secure the Service.
We may add analytics, crash-reporting, advertising, or payment features in the future. If and when we do, we will update this Policy before or at the time those features become active.
The Service is not intended for anyone under 16.

3. Information We Collect

3.1 Information you do not have to provide

In the current version, the Service is anonymous. You do not create an account, and we do not ask you to provide personal information such as your name, email address, phone number, or payment details in order to read content.

3.2 Preferences stored on your device

If you select preferred topics or hide/filter topics, those choices are saved locally on your device only (using your device’s standard local storage). They remain on your device, are not transmitted to us, and are removed if you uninstall the app or clear its local data.

3.3 Information collected automatically by our infrastructure

We host the Service on Google Firebase and Google Cloud. When you access the Service, those providers and our servers automatically receive and may log standard technical data, which can include:

IP address and approximate, region-level location derived from it;
device type, browser type, and operating-system version;
date and time of requests, pages or content requested, and referring/exit information;
diagnostic, error, and performance data.

We use this information to operate, maintain, secure, debug, and improve the Service and to detect and prevent abuse, fraud, and security incidents. We do not use it to build advertising profiles about you.

3.4 Analytics, crash reporting, advertising, and payments (not active today)

The current version of the app does not include a third-party analytics SDK, advertising, or in-app purchases. We may add product analytics, crash and performance reporting, advertising, subscriptions, or in-app purchases in the future. If we do, we may collect data such as app opens, content views, taps, feature usage, crash logs, performance metrics, device and OS details, and approximate region. We will update this Privacy Policy and, where required by law or app-store rules, obtain any necessary consent before or at the time such features become active. We do not claim that we collect no data and do not promise that this will never change.

3.5 Content sources

To provide the Service, we retrieve publicly available Hacker News data through public application programming interfaces (APIs), and we may fetch publicly available metadata or article content from linked websites. This is used to generate rewritten titles, summaries, excerpts, topic labels, images, and “why it matters” context. This processing concerns third-party content, not information about you.

4. How We Use Information

We use the information described above to:

operate, provide, maintain, and improve the Service;
generate and display summaries, titles, topics, images, and context;
secure the Service and protect against abuse, fraud, and unauthorized access;
diagnose technical problems and monitor performance and reliability;
comply with legal obligations and enforce our Terms of Use.

5. Legal Bases (EEA/UK Users)

Where the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation applies, we process personal data on the basis of our legitimate interests (operating, securing, and improving the Service), to perform our agreement with you (providing the Service you request), to comply with legal obligations, and, where applicable, on the basis of your consent (which you may withdraw at any time).

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not “share” it for cross-context behavioral advertising as those terms are defined under California law. We may disclose information:

to service providers and infrastructure vendors who process data on our behalf to operate the Service (for example, hosting, storage, AI processing, and, if added later, analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or payments);
to comply with applicable law, regulation, legal process, or enforceable governmental request;
to enforce our Terms, protect our rights, and protect the safety of users and the public; and
in connection with a merger, acquisition, financing, reorganization, or sale of assets, in which case information may be transferred as a business asset.

7. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third-party providers, which currently include:

Google Firebase (Hosting, Cloud Firestore, Cloud Functions);
Google Cloud Platform (compute, storage, logging);
Google Gemini API (AI text and image processing);
Apple App Store and Google Play (app distribution).

If we later add other providers (for example, analytics, crash reporting, advertising, or payment processors), we will identify the relevant categories of providers in an updated version of this Policy. These third parties process data under their own terms and privacy policies, which we do not control.

8. International Data Transfers

We operate in the United States, and our providers may process and store data in the United States and other countries. If you access the Service from outside the United States, you understand that your information may be transferred to, stored in, and processed in jurisdictions whose data-protection laws may differ from those of your country.

9. Data Retention

We retain information only as long as needed to operate, improve, secure, and support the Service, to comply with our legal obligations, to resolve disputes, and to enforce our agreements. Technical and security logs are generally retained for a limited period and then deleted or aggregated. Preferences stored on your device persist until you remove them, clear local data, or uninstall the app. Email correspondence you send us is retained as long as needed to address your request and keep a reasonable record of it.

10. Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures designed to protect information. However, no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot and do not guarantee absolute security. You use the Service at your own risk.

11. Children

The Service is not directed to, and is not intended for, children under the age of 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 16. If you believe a child under 16 has provided us with personal information, contact us at hi@imag.io and we will take appropriate steps to delete it.

12. Your Privacy Rights

12.1 California (CCPA/CPRA)

If you are a California resident, you have the right to request access to, correction of, or deletion of personal information we hold about you; to request information about our data practices; and to be free from discrimination for exercising your rights. We do not sell or share personal information as defined under California law. To exercise these rights, email hi@imag.io. We may need to verify your request before acting on it.

12.2 EEA, UK, and other regions

Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, or port your personal data; to object to or restrict certain processing; and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. To make a request, email hi@imag.io. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data-protection authority.

Because the current version does not require an account and stores preferences only on your device, much of the limited data we process is technical log data that may not identify you. Where we cannot reasonably link data to you, we may be unable to fulfill a request without additional information.

13. Do Not Track

The Service does not currently respond to browser “Do Not Track” signals, as there is no common industry standard for them.

14. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will revise the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the Service after an update takes effect constitutes your acceptance of the revised Policy.
